First Week of School

Gwen started school this week. I'll be honest- it's been a tough week. I drop her off in smiles and pick her up in tears. I think the bi-lingual nature of school is a much bigger adjustment for her than any of us anticipated. She is also having a harder time making friends than any of us expected... it's really quite heart breaking. She told me the only friend she's made is one of the teachers- he's the one she plays with at recess. And she is a friendly and out going kid- I just don't know what to do. Luckily the school staff seem aware and want to help. Gwen's teacher called me yesterday and set up an apt for Monday afternoon for me to meet with her and all of Gwen's teachers to come up with a game plan for helping her adjust. And when I dropped Gwen off this morning, the headmaster met me at the gate and expressed his concern for her and seemed up to date with some of the problems she's been having (like crying in class and saying she's missing Idaho). I am praying that today will be a good day for her. It's Friday and so it's the fun day at school (art and dance all day). If she comes home today upset, I will know the hurdles we have to jump are even higher than feared.

Ah, the poor lil' gal... I'm sure that is quite the adjustment, but I'm also sure she will conquer these challenges and thrive there. Did you read that NY Times article about the fam who moved to Russia and put their kiddos in a Russian school? Super difficult at first, but they did awesome. I hope things ease up soon for her. Look at that gap-toothed grin! How could anyone NOT want to be friends with her?!

I remember some adjustment to Sorensen too. Give it some time....can you go in and help in her class?

I was also going to suggest you read the NYT piece about the American family in Russia. It was really great, and it may help you to know that she is gaining so much through this difficult time. Good luck!

Poor Gwen. That sucks. It's nice that the teachers are aware and willing to help. I hope she starts having a better time soon.

Does it get any worse than seeing your little one have a hard time like that? I remember feeling somewhat the same way when we moved here and Van didn't have any friends. I'm sure it's way worse for Gwen. I'm glad to hear that the school is on top of the situation and want to help her. Best of luck!

She is so darling Ellie! I hope things are getting better. Nothing breaks my heart more than a child feeling lonely. :( I am sure with time it will get easier and she will adjust. Hugs to you and Gwen.
